Plan Your Path

Community College Success

Your community college years are the foundation of your transfer journey. Plan them strategically.

Choosing a College

Not all community colleges are equal for transfer students. Consider these factors when choosing where to enroll:

  • Transfer rates: How many students transfer to UCs each year?
  • Honors program: Does the college offer an honors transfer program?
  • TAG partnerships: Transfer Admission Guarantee agreements with UCs
  • Major prep availability: Can you complete your intended major's prerequisites?
  • Location: Proximity to home, internships, and research opportunities

Top transfer feeder colleges in California include De Anza, Diablo Valley, Santa Monica, Pasadena City, and Las Positas — but many CCs have strong programs. Talk to a transfer counselor before deciding.

Honors Programs

Honors programs are one of the most valuable resources for transfer students. Benefits typically include:

  • Priority consideration at partner universities (e.g., UCLA TAP)
  • Smaller class sizes with more rigorous coursework
  • Dedicated transfer counseling and workshops
  • Honors notation on your transcript
  • Research and leadership opportunities

Apply to your college's honors program in your first semester. Requirements vary but usually include a minimum GPA (often 3.3+) and an application essay.

GPA Strategy

Your community college GPA is the single most important factor in UC transfer admissions. Here's how to maximize it:

  • Target 3.5+ for competitive UC campuses; 3.7+ for Berkeley/UCLA
  • Take a manageable course load — quality over quantity
  • Use tutoring centers and office hours from day one
  • Retake courses if needed (check UC retake policies)
  • Balance hard major prep courses with manageable electives each semester

Both your overall GPA and your major prep GPA matter. UC admissions calculates a separate GPA for courses required for your intended major.

Course Planning

Every semester should be planned with transfer in mind:

  1. Meet with a transfer counselor to identify your target major's prerequisites
  2. Use ASSIST.org to verify which CC courses fulfill UC requirements
  3. Plan IGETC or campus-specific general education completion
  4. Complete English composition and math requirements early
  5. Save your most challenging major prep courses for when you've adjusted to CC

Create a two-year course plan in your first semester. Adjust as needed, but having a roadmap prevents costly mistakes.

Transfer Planning

Key transfer milestones to track:

  • Semester 1: Declare intended major, join honors, meet transfer counselor
  • Semester 2: Complete English and math requirements, explore TAG
  • Year 2: Complete all major prep, draft UC personal insight questions
  • Fall Year 2: Submit UC application (due November 30)
  • Spring Year 2: Complete remaining courses, submit final transcripts
