HiSET Guide

Everything you need to know about the High School Equivalency Test in California.

What is HiSET?

The HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) is one of two exams approved by California for earning a high school equivalency credential. It measures knowledge and skills equivalent to a high school graduate in five subject areas: Language Arts – Reading, Language Arts – Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

For students pursuing alternative education pathways, HiSET serves as the gateway to community college enrollment and beyond. Once you pass, you receive a California High School Equivalency Certificate — recognized by colleges, employers, and the military.

Eligibility

In California, you are eligible to take the HiSET if you meet these requirements:

  • You are a California resident or a member of the armed forces assigned to duty in California
  • You are 18 years of age or older, OR you are 17 and meet specific conditions
  • You are not currently enrolled in high school
  • You have not already graduated from high school or received a high school equivalency credential

Students age 17 may be eligible with parental consent and proof of withdrawal from school. Check with your local testing center for specific requirements.

Registration

To register for the HiSET in California:

  1. Create an account at hiset.org
  2. Find a testing center near you (community colleges often serve as centers)
  3. Select your test subjects — you can take them all at once or one at a time
  4. Pay the registration fee (varies by center, typically $25-35 per subject)
  5. Schedule your test date(s)

Tip: Many community colleges that serve as HiSET testing centers also allow you to enroll in courses. Ask about dual enrollment options when you register.

Testing Process

The HiSET is offered in two formats:

  • Computer-based: Available at authorized testing centers
  • Paper-based: Available at select locations

Each subject test takes approximately 60-90 minutes. You can:

  • Take all five subjects in one day or spread them across multiple sessions
  • Retake individual subjects if needed (fees apply)
  • Prepare using free resources at hiset.org and Khan Academy

Passing Scores

To earn your California High School Equivalency Certificate via HiSET:

  • Score at least 8 out of 20 on each of the five subtests
  • Score at least 2 out of 6 on the essay portion of Writing
  • Achieve a total score of at least 45 out of 100 across all subtests

Once you pass all five subjects, your certificate is issued by the California Department of Education. You can then use it to enroll in community college.

FAQs

Can I go to community college with a HiSET?

Yes. California community colleges accept HiSET credentials for admission. You can enroll as soon as you receive your certificate.

Is HiSET the same as a high school diploma?

A HiSET credential is a high school equivalency certificate, not a diploma. For college admissions purposes, they are treated equivalently by community colleges and most universities.

How is HiSET different from the GED?

Both are accepted in California. HiSET offers both computer and paper formats, and some students find its structure more approachable. Either credential works for community college and transfer.

What should I do after passing HiSET?

Enroll in community college, join an honors program if available, and start planning your transfer pathway. See our Community College and UC Transfer guides for next steps.
