How I Left High School Early and Still Made It to UC
A personal account of choosing an alternative path and the decisions that led to college success.
This is a composite account drawn from the journeys of students we've worked with and researched — the details are typical, even though the narrator is not one specific person. We share it because the decision to leave traditional high school early feels enormous, and it helps to see the whole arc at once.
The decision
By sophomore year, school had become a place I endured rather than used. I was doing fine — that was almost the problem. Fine meant invisible. When I found out California students can take the HiSET and start community college early, it didn't feel like dropping out. It felt like skipping ahead.
My parents needed convincing. What worked was a written plan: which test, which college, which major, which transfer target, and which courses in which semesters. Adults respond to plans.
The test
I studied for about two months using free official practice tests. The math section needed real work; reading and writing mostly needed familiarity with the format. Passing all five subjects felt anticlimactic — a quiet Tuesday, a printout, and suddenly I was done with high school.
Community college was the actual beginning
Walking into a college class at 17 was intimidating for about a week. Then it became the most normal thing in the world — community colleges are full of people of every age taking every kind of path. I joined the honors program, found two professors who knew my name, and discovered I could actually like school when it moved at my speed.
The hard parts were real too: making friends took deliberate effort, and nobody hands you a structure. You build your own — counseling appointments, education plans, deadline trackers.
The transfer
Two years later I submitted a UC application with a 3.8 GPA, completed major prep, and essays that told the truth: I left early because I wanted more, and here's what I did with it. The acceptance came in spring.
